Pet planarians

I adopted some planarians after they finished their “sitting in a dish for intro biology labs” duties.

Aren’t they adorable?

I also got a little female betta fish to keep them company. I liked her better than all the grumpy looking males at the pet store.

So far I have fed the planarians a bit of hardboiled egg yolk, they have been swarming over it for a few hours now. Seems like it will be fairly simply to keep them happy. Have you ever kept planarians as pets? Any tips or suggestions?

  1. One of my biology teachers offered them to me to keep because she had some from the last year’s class (I declined because they were too adorable to accidentally kill) – she said they’ll eat just about anything, including bit of egg or bit of burger.

  2. The betta will eat the planarians once she grows some more…At least my bettas are fond of them…..

    • I saw her try to eat one… and then spit it out and keep spitting and rubbing her mouth against the plants for a few minutes. She appears to still avoid them… we’ll see whether or not they disappear I guess!
